"Should" is one of those words I would ban from tmp Polls.

You can get a better game, of the same genre, using "Stargaurd" and it's supplements, which is still in print.

"Stargaurd" was out long before "Starship Troopers" (either Avalon Hill's game or Mongoose Publishing's game") and in my opinion plays better and is more flexible.

You know, this faintly reminds me of the recent fuss about ancients rules in which someone argued that there should be fewer published. He never said who would get to decide.

I'm not a fan of franchise rules because they're prone to disappearing like this. I didn't play this one, but a lot of people did, and I'd be happy to see the rules--it was not a game: it was a set of miniatures rules--back in production.

But why are they out of production? And who's offering to pay how much to bring them back?

The poll *says* it was put out by Mongoose. grin

Seconded. I don't know what the point of this poll is.

It was a fun game. It did well, but the licensing from Sony killed it. Not sure it CAN be brought back…without a boat-load of money going to Sony.

I played a lot of SST, but I found the rules were pretty fiddly and the layout confusing. It got bogged down with more than about 30 MI or more. Also just too much stuff, did they really need 30 different weapons?

I've tried it Tomorrow's War and now trying with 5150. The rules have to have a reaction system and strong rules around melee combat to simulate the bug attacks.

Beast Rampant, I don't think being produced by Mongoose is in itself a reason something should be out of print. (For certain other companies, I'd agree with the idea.) But do we know WHY it was killed? Did Sony ask for more money to renew the license? Did Mongoose not make enough to make the initial licensing deal profitable? How much money in a boatload?

But it is one of the reasons I'm wary of franchise games. The amount of money you can get from wargamers or RPG people isn't enough to keep the attention of people who might spend a quarter-billion on a movie, so the rights for things like Barsoom, Star Wars, Conan or Star Wars keep bouncing around. You're left with figures you can't match and rules you can't get more copies of, guarded by lawyers who are paid more money than I'll ever see to make sure I don't find a way out of the mess.

I think by and large we're better off to buy the franchise figures, if they're nice figures, but not to play with rules whose owners don't care about the level of money we spend.

All you guys jumping on the hot new Star Wars miniature game: what has been the average lifespan of a Star Wars miniature game so far? And how often have they changed the scale of the figures and killed the old line? I'd think about it before I started a new project--and I'd try very hard to buy all the figures I might ever want in six months or so.

I'd prefer to see it in 15mm or 20mm, with more streamlined rules.

I'd like to see it brought back, though the troopers need some new opponents to keep things fresh, and interesting, instead of just fighting bugs.

A skirmish game would be neat.

I'd like to see this in 15mm scale as well, even with different bugs, and enemies. With the many non-Starship Troopers factions available, and even various bugs and aliens, that's easily possible now, if you find a set of rules you like.

There are a number of decent proxy troopers that are available now.
