Just want to point out the "hero" taking of his helmet, isn't to look cool, but so the audience can easily see and recognize him. If you look at reviews of say band of brothers or black hawk down.
A common complaint is the difficulty recognizing the various characters.

Not wearing a helmet or even a cap is my biggest gripe. I have no trouble seeing who the actor is with the helmet on. I still see it is Tom Hanks in Saving Private Ryan. I recognize all of them in A Bridge Too Far.

It drives me crazy when they do take them off. It is constant complaint I have with TV shows like Stargate SG-1. Most of the time they aren't even wearing a cap. Vic Morrow kept his helmet on in Combat and I could see him just fine. I could see who was who in Black Hawk Down, in Band of Brothers, The Thin Red Line etc..

Can't tell who is who? Nonsense!

I remember in the movie Midway they used footage from Tora Tora Tora. Did they think no one would notice?

The dominating love interest isn't necessarily bad. Case in point, Casablanca.

Since Winston/John isn't here anymore, I'll have to channel him.
Movies aren't for wargamers.
It's a common complaint in reviews that a bunch of young men in same uniforms, helmets and dirt in their faces are hard too keep track off.

Also SG1 is a reckon team, SG3 is the direct action team and almost always use helmets.
Sg1 does use helmets if they know they are going into a hot situation.
