It's never been cool, but then again it's never been uncool either. It's just another rules mechanism.

I've been through many game mechanics and found that IGO-UGO within a phase (ie I move you move/we both shoot/we both melee) works the best without all the headache of some of the more clever game mechanics out there.

It's s mechanism and it works.
I do not have a religious attachment to it, but it seems some have a religious taboo to it.
YMMV.

I prefer modified IGOUGO
Lion Rampant for instance.
Or I move, you move. I shoot you shoot.
Etc.

I give the player the choice of Move First/Fire Second or Move Second/Fire First in the IGOUGO system in my rules.

Usually you want the first fire, but there are times when the first move is more important in order to execute a charge or change facing/formation to defend against a charge.

UGO-IGO has never been cool or will it ever be Cool.

There are far better systems and in the two big games that are mentioned it can mean…

IGO and U-Lose

or

UGO and I-Lose

Which is why it has never been cool.

Whatever the rules/period/scale requires and produces an enjoyable game.

I'm with Mithmee on this topic. If I want IGO/UGO there are chess and checkers.
