You can have Magic but you need to limit its power.

You can't have Wizards throwing unit killing spells all over the place every single turn.

I would love to see a ruleset that was truly High Fantasy, with wizards locked in titanic battles involving hordes of troops.

EDITOR: TSR's old Battlesystem?

Way back oh, 10 years or so ago, I had a WHFB dwarf army that was nigh unbeatable. They only lost one time, and that was a VERY low point pick-up game because my opponent only had a few models to play with.

My number one factor in army make-up was negating completely any magic the enemy had, and then applying wide not deep shooters, some artillery, with Longbeards and Hammerers to back them up.

Most players tend to invest in magic, and it is a points-hole. For dwarves, dispel dice were relatively cheap and being able to defeat that from the start gave my stunties a HUGE edge. I had BUCKETS of dispel(?) dice each turn to use against their magic turns.
