"This is ridiculous" because sanity is a spectrum, not a true/false.
The "Evil" option could apply wherever on the spectrum he is placed.

"Psychopathy" does not equal "Insanity."

"Insanity/psychosis" is when you're standing in the rain and you think you're lost in the Sahara.

Uncle Joe ALWAYS knew what he was doing, and what he was doing was what he WANTED to do. When he wasn't actually enjoying the pain he inflicted, he simply didn't give a rodent's sphincter about the cost to others of his self-gratification.

And that is the definition of "Evil."

Not sure he would have met the McNaghten standard for legal insanity/ diminished capacity.
