This list was harder for me to find five initially. Some "interesting" candidates there. |

We are getting pretty arcane here – for example, I am not sure I am up to reading "a metaphorical fugue on minds and machines" Very interesting list of choices |

If you stop and think about the original question, "what books do you think EVERYONE SHOULD read", it is not easy to pick five from these lists. Try this. Before voting for a book, imagine telling a stranger they should read it. They ask why. Can you make a convincing case for it? Of course, it is a lot easier to pick your personal top five from each list! |

You should read all those books that interest you honestly. I could suggest but you might end up not being interested in my suggestions. "No opinion" is the closest for me. |

Where is The Histories by Herodotus? Lord Foul's Bane Sucks! |

While using alphabetized lists is an easy method for the questioner (OP) it is not conducive for accurate results. Using this list I had trouble finding 5 books that I would recommend when I had more then 5 on previous lists that I could not check |

In fairness to the OP – I never suggested breaking it down into multiple lists – I think that has probably been done for convenience. I think the final short list of 25 or so books will still represent a good selection – but it'll be a somewhat skewed lists (the number 5 from Poll C may get fewer votes than the number 6 or 7 from poll B for example). In the world of stat's the fact that the picking is being done mostly by middle aged men is probably of more significance. Fortunately this mostly represents a bit of fun, and, who knows, maybe an interesting list of books to read. |

Should you only vote for what you have read? Anything else is hypocritical! |

again too many books, I had a long list of 12, a short list of eight… and getting that down to five was painful… |

Don't you mean "Anything else is hypothetical"? |

What?! Only six percent for 'Green Eggs and Ham'? Lots of good choices on that one, nah, on all of them thus far. Hmmm, wondering why the Tolkien is so popular right now? |

Drag! Was looking for 'Lord Jim' amongst the other 'Lords' titles. :) |

Was looking for 'Lord Jim' amongst the other 'Lords' titles. :) I concur. It should have been in the list. |

I was pleased at how many of the titles so far in all three polls I have read. |
