Other: a specific term appropriate to the setting. It might be faction in a multi-sided civil-war, for example. In WW2 it is might be nation, or army, or division depending upon which level from which the troops are drawn. Prehistoric games might have tribes or clans.

That's the wrong link to the pre-poll discussion.

The appropriate term depends on the setting of the game. Why would I use the same one for gang warfare in New York that I would apply to inter-species struggles in the vastness of space?

I'm curious.

What Termanology do they use when gaming in other countries/languages?

None. "Termanology" isn't a word in any language.

Contra Factions
Pro Government factions

I prefer the term "Factions" as it a broad umbrella that covers them all. If referring to a particular group, it's best to use the group's common name. There can be many groups aligned with one side or another but be sure, they are mostly out for themselves. Many are just bands of bandits that may swing allegiances at a drop of a hat if it best supports their goals.

I am ok with faction as long as it is not used for nations and national armies! This happens all the time in PC gaming. The US faction or the UK faction just does not cut it!

Cerdic01 Oct 2022 9:25 a.m. PST

A faction is ‘a dissenting group within a larger group'.

So most uses of the word in a war gaming context are utterly incorrect.

"Side" that is the obvious answer. Which side are you on? The British. It's simple. Don't over think it. The answer is "side".

Which side are you on? The Allies.

etc.
