I voted no opinion, but on second thought I measured across my shoulders and I would not fit in 1.5 feet. That is not wearing any armor or having any ability to move either arm.

So I will have to change my vote to no.

The ONLY way that 1.5' spacing works,is if that is the distance from one man to another man, side by side.

I originally agreed because I thought he meant the actual space between each man was 18". But reading it again, the questions seems ambiguous, either by the author or the OP. Is it 18" per man or is it a space of 18" between each man?

Expanding on what TKindred said…
Even in the ACW, space per man (ie shoulder to shoulder) was about 22"…or essentially not more than 2 feet. The men back them with equipment and so forth would likely be a bit wider.

So…which is it?

The fact that modern folk wouldn't fit an 18" frontage is merely an indication of scale creep.

The hoplon is about three feet wide, so how could the available space per man be half of it ?

Hang on, I'll consult period photographs… as soon as I warm up the ol' time machine.
