How does Zulu keep getting votes? It's a great movie, but it is chock full of historical inaccuracies, most of which were evidently deliberately introduced to allow Cy Enfield to score ideological points.

Because we like it. That's why. grin

No Gettysburg? Would someone explain this to me. I know it is based on a novel but it is more accurate than most of the movies on the list. Did it make any of the early rounds?

Old Contemptibles28 Nov 2015 12:36 a.m. PST

Saving Private Ryan? I liked the movie too. But beyond the Omaha Beach scene, the rest is fiction. The poll is not about the best liked movies.

Even the Omaha beach scene is quite fictional, as Omaha does not look like an Irish beach where the scene was filmed, neither was there huge tower bunkers.

The rest of the movie is a cliche action war movie, no more realistic or authentic then: where eagles dare, Guns of navarone or Kelly's heroes. More blood sure, but thats it.

For me it's a Bridge Too Far. Like all movies it takes some liberties but mostly stays true to actual events.

The one on the list that kills me is Black Hawk Down. Eversmann's squad was one of 2 chalk squads that secured the Blackhawk site. The main effort was by Ditomaso's squad. It completely does away with the Navy SEALs who were involved and the list just goes on. A Great War movie but not much more.

Also the medic in eversman chalk, was actually delta. Lots of little details like that. So i agree a bridge too far, for me the best war movie made.

Lots of little details like that.

Or not so little details like the fact that few of the "Somalis" looked like Somalis? Gamers kvetch because the "Tiger" in SPR didn't bother modding the T-34 running gear, but overlook something like that.

SeattleGamer28 Nov 2015 7:40 p.m. PST

Right after SPR came out, there were all sorts of stories in the American press about sons who who went to see it, and then they sat down with their fathers who had been there, and the fathers saying things like "That is as close as I've ever seen it depicted on film" and the sons being so shocked and saying things like "I had no idea"

So the rest of the movie may have just been typical Hollywood, but the beach landing scenes got a lot of press over here from those who were there. No other movie on that list even comes close to this impact.

That said, Zulu is my favorite of the movies listed!

Winston Smith29 Nov 2015 7:46 p.m. PST

Zulu has no comments about the Germans lacking top tenors.

No Gettysburg? Would someone explain this to me.

Nobody nominated it.

Old Contemptibles07 Dec 2015 8:22 a.m. PST

Nominate yourself. Needed to be on the list.
