Does Subbuteo count as a miniatures game? For those who are unaware, it was a very popular tabletop football game in the 60s and 70s played with miniature figures about 20mm size. I imagine it's market was taken by video games? Based on sales, that has got to be your answer right there! Oh, that is football as in soccer by the way. Another small point. There are two poll options for 'football'. Surely (European) should read (rest of the World)…. |

I can't say that I'd be the least bit interested in any that I picked, but I was going for best simulation. I REALLY wanted to pick fishing. I would love to see the miniatures for that one. |

I played Subbuteo a few times. Good game. And there are loads of gladiator games too. |

Are gladiators, chariot racing and jousting really sports? |

I can tell you that some of these games really don't work for miniatures games in my opinion (and I have playtested a bunch of them). Baseball is quite difficult, and American football has too many moving pieces in immediate action to simulate. I have been involved in at least 3 attempts to bring it to the table and it hasn't worked. For basketball, the closest to a good game was JARHU the game of DEATH, as created by Wally Simon. (He at least used basketball figures for his sports game.) As for what works. 6. Car Racing 5. Chariot Racing 4. I can see Ice hockey since each side only has 6 figures. 3. Fox hunting can work, we did dinosaur hunting and the characteristics of the small ones would work fine. 2. Fencing/Jousting work and I have enjoyed those games. #1 best for miniatures gaming Futebol/Soccer/Football. And the best version is a rule set called CORNERKICK. (Not that I am in anyway biased about these rules.) (Disclaimer: I am a co-author of Cornerkick.) |

Jousting is the official state sport of Maryland. |

The whole "real world" clause is an attempt to deprive the juggers of their rightful place. Go find a copy of Blood of Heroes with Rutger Hauer. |

I have played a well thought out NASCAR game at a convention. Good fun. I have also played some nail biting chariot race games. They were based on Avalon Hill's Cirvus Maximus. Plenty of good gladiator games out there. And I can't leave out Blood Bowl, the only real fantasy football game out there. At one point I had 5 teams. |

Gladiators must work, since there are so many rules/figures out there. The one set I tried was basically rock/paper/scissors,though. +1 Robert Piepenbrink. But it is a "real" game: youtu.be/QHKyepF0Tzc As for other SF-based games, Hussade might be possible with miniatures. Wanted to try the real thing(in my 20's,that is!). A real-life version would be too expensive, though there's been some discussion on the web. A video game version is the likeliest to see the light of day: youtu.be/yMhalsbyA2M |
