Even worse: I've done this with books. Mostly because they had a different cover, but I've done it with Ospreys too.

Likewise, with figures, terrain, books, magazines, rules, boardgames. I've even bought duplicates knowing that I already have the items. It's an occupational hazard of being a bargain hunter and habitual trader.

I tend in the first place to buy hobby product I like when I see it, before it goes OOP. If I know it's already OOP and I see it for sale, I can rarely resist. I don't worry about when I'll get around to playing with it. I can afford the expense and I have the storage space, a big old house in the mid-west, just me and my gal. Ahhh…room to spread out.

Yes, I'm a hoarder, my heirs can deal with the problem. I have a pretty good idea of what's in the collection…usually. I can even find it…usually. I'm pretty well organized. Maintaining the inventory is part of my hobby.

What happens is, I'll find a bargain batch of product for sale in bulk. Some retailer has a 'buy six get one free' or 'dump my excess inventory' sale. (I'm looking at you, Mouse.) Or someone in a classified ad is selling 50 Aircraft Profiles for $75. USD Or someone at a flea market is dumping 1000 X 15mm Biblicals for $50. USD

Well, I'll snap the bargain up. Even though I know I already have 200 unpainted 15mm Assyrians, or 6 of the Aircraft Profiles (from 1982!). I figure I can always keep the better copy of the book and sell the excess on again.

And I trade often. It just takes time to organize the inventory, take photos, compose and post ads, correspond with customers…all part of my hobby. So there's, hum, a bit of a backlog.

But nothing pathological, I assure you. You can still at least see the floor in every room in my house, the basement too. You can sit on the couch in the parlor, eat at the dining room table and prepare food on the kitchen counters. The garage is getting to be a problem.

My heirs can deal with my hoard. I do enough for them.

I tend to recklessly buy the following to add to my Fantasy horde:

Der Kriegspieler Dwarf and ('smiling') goblins – link – Never enough

Wizards, Warriors, and Warlocks Dwarf/Goblins, and (older design) Ral Partha Giant Orcs (Chainmail and helmet/sword, polearm, sword,) – link – Also never enough

Also these dwarves – link and link

Getting rid of all my other Dwarves except established PCs to make room for these…

Yep – in fact, yesterday I came across four Austrian regiments (1 Hungarian infantry, 1 Grenzer and two dragoons) that I had bought, put away and forgot about

On the plus side, now I can flush out my Austrian cavalry

I have also bought the same book – twice as I recall; made me look good when I gave them to a buddy

I remember picking up some Orc pirates at a convention. When I got home to put them away, I found in the box where I put them away to get around to eventually the exact same Orc pirates.
When did I get the first batch? No clue.
But they did get painted up and played with eventually.

never with miniatures or games

all too frequently with books – at least I did, the digital age means that Amazon helpfully tells me I'm buying the same kindle book, so I do this less often now.

I've only done it a few times and not a whole lot of stuff was involved. The oddest for me was that I did it with dice. I knew I needed certain dice for a certain rule set or game and was at a con. Dice were plentiful, cheap and readily available. I grabbed what I needed only to find them already at home. Now I make project lists and shopping lists to help avoid a repetition. Also, I now make project lists and shopping lists to help avoid a repetition. And…

Heiser 1/87 resin WW2 vehicles. These are limited production runs and often with long waits between re-runs. I need to do a better job of remembering which ones I've finally acquired and which ones are still on the wishlist.

Oh well, it's not a horrible fate having an extra platoon of superb models of the M24 Chaffee ^,^

No, but I've come close. Books are another matter. That has happened when the same book is published with different titles for U.K. and U.S. release.

Minis, rules and books, sometimes in error sometimes on purpose. In fact while on vacation earlier this week I found another copy of "Barbary Wars: Register of Officer Personnel, US Navy and Marine Corps and ships data 1801-07". This new copy is in better condition and somewhat less expensive. My wife called it my "treasure".

jeffreyw329 Jul 2015 3:04 p.m. PST

Not with figures, but with paints. I have a number of dupes of Vallejo codes that will survive me…

The Beast Rampant29 Jul 2015 5:18 p.m. PST

Yes! Definitely paints. Part of the brain issue where I can easily recall ten colors I need, UNTIL I'm standing in the store, then I apparently just grab random colors I can't even mix into something useful.

Now, many times I've gone looking for minis that I'd forgotten I sold off.

tkdguy29 Jul 2015 8:09 p.m. PST

No, but I have bought a few particular miniatures twice to try a different paint scheme.

Cardinal Hawkwood29 Jul 2015 8:23 p.m. PST

not myself but I was selling some stuff on ebay for a friend and I later found out he had actually bid on it and won it.Very strange

zippyfusenet30 Jul 2015 4:20 a.m. PST

Hawkwood for the win! Bwahahaha!

Mako1131 Jul 2015 2:09 a.m. PST

Yes, occasionally.

Anyone need my second copy on the German Milchkuhe U-Boats (sorry for the lack of the umlaut, but I forgot the code)?

It's and excellent hardcopy book, in pristine condition, filled with lots of useful wargaming scenarios for gaming with U-Boats in the Atlantic.

Recommended, and is obviously quite good, since I bothered to purchase TWO copies of it.

Scorpio31 Jul 2015 7:09 a.m. PST

At least once a year, sadly.

ranger603 Aug 2015 8:42 p.m. PST

The question further breaks down to: on purpose or by accident. I duplicate quite a few minis to allow for painting different camo schemes but didn't paint the first ones. In effect duplicating, even though that's not the result.
