Reading history, always enjoyable, has that extra fillup if you are reading with a purpose. And if the purpose ties in with your gaming interests, what could be better?

This is one of the joys of wargaming any period, not just Ancients.

I would always have some idea beforehand.

Not sure why this is specific to Ancients?

Not just Ancients, I go through the process before I get involved in a new period. Sometimes I just decide not to go into the period and sometimes I go forward.

Researching a force is what motivates me to buy minis for it.

DOM concurs.

I don't look at a list and go "Hmmmmm…..This will let me deal with Thracian in the woods!"
Unless I'm already interested in that army, I don't go looking for figures for it.

That – exactly.

If I wanted to win would I own Libyans ?

Actually, it's worse for me outside of Ancients. I get to reading up on the one good day of an army with a bad track record, and after a while I'm standing behind an entire table of Napoleonic Spanish, 1940 French or 1866 Austrians.

Stop me, before I build again!

Actually, it is my interest in history that got me into gaming in general.

Now when I pick up some figures on Ebay or from a TMPer that are from a country, region, or era that I don't already have an army for that catches my interest I do more detailed research.
