First, I'm impressed that I guessed the same here as I did in the pre-poll without looking first.

I am disappointed in myself that I didn't recommend the following scale:

C'est parfait!
Efficace.
Comme ci, Comme ca …
Pas mal.
Juh parhl an poo.
Suckez-vouz!
I don't speak French.

Je ne parle q'un petit peu le français.

Or something like that. My French used to be pretty good but without any opportunity to use it I have lost almost all of it. Contrary to popular myth, the number of Francophones in Louisiana is small and what passes for French in most of the state – Cajun and creole – is as close to modern French as English is to medieval German so the only practice I get is around the house.

I know so little I can't even use bad language in French.

I can pronounce most things, but mostly I can read in context and puzzle it out

No habla, but I can puzzle out many words and phrases in French uniform books and websites.

Je parle mal et lentement le francais

I speak French well enough to travel in France without speaking English – although my comprehension is not so swift

I can puzzle through a grant application – but don't try to have me read Voltaire!

. . . I thought using French here was a blockable offense, due to it being inherently insulting and rude?

Failed my O-level mock exams three times… the highest mark I got was 7%.

Why would I need to learn French when pretty much everyone else in the world speaks English as a second language?

Raised to speak French in a Dutch-speaking country where all English is subtitled and German kid's TV is readily accessible.

Dutch/French native speaker, as good as it gets for a non-native English speaker and a fair command of German.

Speak? No. But I did pass a written translation exam (French-English) in graduate school so I'm giving myself a 1 instead of a 0.

L'addition s'il vous plait is the only thing that I can say with panache, but have not starved or died of thirst on a number of visits to France.

I can read French reasonably well --but mainly due to its similarites with my own language, Catalan.
A part from this circumstance, I've never learnt their beautiful language, so in the practice I'm pretty bad at speaking it.
But never surrender giving it a try! grin

I took it in college and never used it. Don't hardly remember any of it.
