I'm well invested in 28mm for Skirmish purposes,
and have too much painted
that I am reasonably Proud of to consider Divesting
in the forseeable future.

Additionally: I have always used 6mm for mass combat
(Yes: a Legacy of the 'Golden Days' of GW;
but also a Heritage of OGRE & GEV and Galactic Knights from the '70's)
6mm is also experiencing a bitof a Rennaisance… Lotsa New Stuff!

FYI: Reb Maksim Smelchak appears to be the Avatar of 6mm Gaming,
what with his Blog,Yahoo group, and continuous presence around the web:

6mm-minis.blogspot.com )

Tactical Command and GW's 'SpecialstGames's site also have quite a bit
(Although TacCommand seems to be down momentarily…)
link
And of Course Ogre and Galactic Knights are still around…

Having said all That:
If I were Starting in SF gaming -today-,
Would I be jumping into 10mm?
You Betcha!

All my SF is 6mm. If I were to get back into skirmish or roleplay, I would probably go with 28mm – you don't need many figures, and there is some lovely stuff out there. But it would be very small scale.

GreatScot7218 Mar 2010 5:32 a.m. PST

I am also too invested into 28mm and 20mm. I have a small force of 10mm for sci fi gaming and love it-I strongly prefer 10 over 15mm any day. I have painted loads of 15s for others and while I do enjoy much of the new 15mm content that has been popping up recently, 15s just don't give me enough of what the other scales do. I collect and paint more for the enjoyment of the figures than for gaming. 28s and 20s give me much better detail, and 10 gives me much greater economy of gaming and storage space.

I can see where 15 is a perfect compromise of both size and scale for some, but I couldn't see myself going to 15 any yime in the future.

Dravi7418 Mar 2010 6:01 a.m. PST

I like 25+ for the detail and 6mm for the mass effect. So although there is a lot of very tempting 15mm stuff out there, I'm not buying it unless I can work it for 25+ or 6mm (or I just want to get it because it's nice).

I don't have any 28mm SF figures (4 figs doesn't count I don't think. I traded my embryonic Tau force to start my 15mm WW2 Canadians.

I don't have any 15mm SF either…yet.

I have a ton of 40K stuff, but we really hate the rules. The scenery also takes up too much space as do the figures.

I have acquired a significant amount of Epic 40k as well. I will probably keep these and invest my time in finding a good set of rules (NetEpic is an option).

I will have to look at what is available in 15mm, although I am leaning towards 10mm by Pendraken.

15s just can not beat 28's in terms of figure detail. And, as said above, 6mm is the way to go for mass effect.

I am only doing Star Wars and as the prepainted stuff is cheaper then dirt I am staying with those.

I love the cost of 15mm and the selection of them. I can have 20 figures for the cost of 3 28mm and have battles on smaller tables. Plus with vehicles cost and space are easier to deal with too. It's nice to be able to skirmish with the different selections out there. Must first love was Starguard for sci-fi he has a great range and good prices but 15 is so much easier. I'd play those rules now and not change a thing just add 15mm figures.

I am slowly working on my 15mm zombie horde and survivors. I think that is the best scale to get the look I want.

But I have too many 28mm to not use them for my Sci-fi skirmish gaming. I mean they are like 80% of my collection.

Smaller than 15mm is just out for me as coming from a RPG background I just feel hordes of unnamed troops to impersonal to play.

I mean give me 6-10 28mm people to follow and watch as their stats and prestige grow and I am all over it. Give me 50 15mm random troopers and I really could care less.
28mm give me the detail I crave – 15mm are starting to get a lot of good treatment(I am simmering on the idea of necromunda in 15mm to see how big I can really make the underhive) but I still haven't seen the options I can get in 28mm.

Scorpio18 Mar 2010 12:08 p.m. PST

I firmly believe that the 15mm crowd is vocal, and has more options to buy than they did even five years ago, but 28mm is king, and that isn't changing anytime soon.

Goldwyrm18 Mar 2010 12:51 p.m. PST

My 15mm stuff can fit in a single box. My 28mm collection takes up a room in my basement and a good portion of my garage. While I do both, 15mm Sci-fi doesn't even come close in competing with my interest in 28mm gaming.

The Nigerian Lead Minister18 Mar 2010 1:19 p.m. PST

I have 10 different platoons of 28mm sci fi stuff that I can play with. But Khurasan and GZG keep pimping their 15mm stuff and one of these days I'll have to give in.

I do most of my other gaming in 15mm, so I have the terrain for 15mm, all I need is the figures.

Warbeads18 Mar 2010 2:11 p.m. PST

I have mostly 6 mm (more than I want actually,) plus a small amount of 25 mm for Skirmish. I do have 15 mm but it's not staying around long. Terrain and minimizing scales are my driving forces in that decision.

Gracias,

Glenn

I have some very nice near future 28mm squads but have found that 15mm allows me to field platoons with support options on a smaller table, and with terrain that I can store more of in a smaller area as well. It also allows vehicles to play more of a role.

Over the last year I have bought a lot more 15mm than 28mm.

f u u f n f18 Mar 2010 4:08 p.m. PST

I am shifting from heroic 28s(+) to "true" 25s. I like the smaller figures, but 15mm just gets to small for my eyes to paint. 25s mix pretty well with 1/72 scale vehicles too.

kyoteblue18 Mar 2010 6:12 p.m. PST

Shrug I like 15mm…

Shagnasty Supporting Member of TMP18 Mar 2010 7:14 p.m. PST

I almost never play SciFi and it is either Space ship games or a rare 28 skirmish.

Space Monkey18 Mar 2010 9:58 p.m. PST

Most all my stuff is 28mm, for RPG and skirmish… or 6mm for mass combat. I've got a tiny collection of 15mm Laserburn figs and another collection of Dark Future stuff that's… what… 20mm?
I love GZG and their 15mm stuff looks fantastic but I just can't see what I'd use it for… unless maybe I started playing Traveller again or I found someone who wanted to play Snapshot/Azhanti HL/Striker.

CC, my friend, like many of the above I have too much 28mm to change over – plus, I have the good luck to have a house with a big basement that lets me game/store the stuff without too much limitation

Also, the Missus will shoot me dead if I start a new army given the big piles of lead/plastic I have yet to paint – and she is one smart cookie, so I couldn't put it past her!

Also, none of the guys in the group have the 15mm sci-fi bug yet -although, as noted above, I suspect given the high quality of new releases it is only a question of time

psiloi24 Mar 2010 1:53 a.m. PST

Kinda a small hitch I would gladly game both scales, but I really suck at painting 15mm for some reason. I actually like to plan on painting what I buy, so its hard to get into 15mm right now.

Two Owl Bob24 Mar 2010 2:06 a.m. PST

I have some 28mm stuff, I have some 15mm stuff but on a basis of weight of lead I am pretty much 6mm only for Sci-Fi. Battletech, Dirtside, Baccus and small amounts of GW Epic stuff account for most of my Sci-Fi armies as I like to play games based on planetary assaults – first the spaceships then the dropships and finally the armour, infantry and the mechs, lots of luvverly mechs. It all seems to work well from starship scale (1:1200-ish?) to 1:300-ish for the ground troops, not so well to 15mm or 28mm scales; I don't have a tennis court handy to play in.
