Other: aircraft carriers are over priced status symbols.

The Navy has aerial refuelers. When I was serving on carriers we had A-6 tankers. We could also use Air Force tankers. The Navy is now using tanker drones launched from carriers.

It seems to me that the Air Force has plenty of tankers – and as noted drones can probably be very useful

Have to disagree with you Deucey. After the Falklands conflict no one has seriously argued that carriers aren't needed.

The navy needs quantity of firing platforms. They do not need to be 30 plus knots over priced speedsters. They do need to pack a punch. Cheaper, slower and more of them.
Carriers, too many eggs in one basket…and air wings unable to reach the target.
Whatever the force mix, the Navy is the service to lead into the future.
Our subs are great , but are they enough?

I ran across an interesting photo the other day in a book ( Yes, remember those? :D ) that showed a proposal to modify or build a seaplane tender submarine to service the Martin Seamaster jet seaplane. Would have been less vulnerable than a surface tender, but of course the Seamaster was deemed unnecessary for many reasons.

But seaplanes, despite some disadvantages, would certainly serve well in the tanker role.

I apologize for the previous naval frustration rant.
This was not my topic.
Seaplane tankers intriguing concept…
