Only one. I have a Rorke's Drift set….. And I'm trying to figure out an alternate Zulu attack plan…. |

Often. Mine are close to the real thing but I usually don't get the numbers of troops exact. Close but not exact. |

Often: I believe the historical refight is the gold standard of wargaming. It isn't always practical, and more generic wargames are also quite useful to refine rules mechanisms and allow historically inspired armies to get a wide usage … But in the end my wargaming is about exploring history through games – so closer to the real thing is better. Additionally, as a military historian, I find wargame models and layouts very useful for presenting historical battles to the public (as miniature tableaux vivants) and running the battles through as wargames a very useful way of testing theories about battles where the accounts are less than complete. Of course you get out of them what you put into them (so nobody is claiming it is an exact science)… Phil Ancients on the Move |

For about the last ten years I've mostly been doing historical refights with the occasional "what if?" game and some quick things here and there when I was excited about a period and didn't have the figures yet. But the goal is always to create the OOB for a particular battle and then fight it out when I'm doing historicals. |

PzGeneral, I suspect that having any plan would help. |

Right now I'm doing a re-fight of Jutland at !/2 ratio. Love re-fights! |

It's an interesting coincidence that this poll came out just after my group did an excellent re-fight of Stone's River (Murfreesboro). In case you are interested, the Confederates lost after a hard-fought action. |

My preference is for historical scenarios or "refights" as oppose to hypothetical scenarios. But I do enjoy both. The hypothetical scenario needs to be in the right historical context. It needs to be plausible. It needs to make sense. But with everything else being equal, I will always choose the historical over the hypothetical. |

When I collect armies I always do so based on a historical battle. Even if doing a skirmish I would find it difficult to field forces who weren't in the area at the time. I am more a historian than a gamer, I suppose. |
