I always save the base for last. I find the base handy for wiping off excess paint from the brush, so…

I don't landscape my bases.

I (usually) don't do pro basing, but I do a lot of terrain that has lots of sand, grit, twigs, and plants. I almost always paint it. It is almost never the colors I need for the scene.

I usually don't paint it, but in the past, we've done so, because the look of the natural rocks looked odd next to painted parts.

I always paint my ballast/pebbles/stones, but any wooden bits (which I rarely use) are always metal, plastic, or resin.

It always surprises me that many people who buy ready made trees don't repaint the trunks but leave them in shiny plastic. I always paint stones on my bases.

my ready made trees are cut from bushes and trees in my back yard and the woods down the road :) and the rocks come from the creek and rock pit also down the road. no need to paint them they are already colored better then any painter could dream of painting them.

I use three colors of sand, as well as some model RR ballast, mixed together. I paint the base with wood glue, then I dunk them in the mix -- no painting required.

I also sometimes add in some pebbles to represent boulders. These I will apply The Dip to, to give them some shading, and to darken them just a bit. Cheers!
