There's a part of "Achtung, Schweinhund!" devoted to these books. Apparently they were a right of passage for those of us of a certain age. I know I read them all, although by the last few it was only so I could be sure that I wasn't missing anything. |

Writing in Achtung, Schweinhund!, Harry Pearson tells of being introduced by the "older boys" to a new type of war fiction: It was easy to see the appeal of Hassel's world to the teenage male. It was one of camaraderie, hunger, cold, loathsome authority figures and the constant threat of sudden and extreme violence. It seemed that serving in a penal battalion of a Panzer Division was not at all unlike being at boarding school, though the food was probably better. Did you read Sven Hassel's books as a teenager? |
