Absolutely correct, Dave Cromwell, we've even used old Machine-miniatures from Planetstorm/Legions of Steel with AT-43. Looks just fine on the table.
As with both WHFB & 40k, non-GW mini's should be perfectly acceptable when playing amongst friends.
(PS. the Warjacks = Warmachine? + it's fantasy counterpart: Hordes)

Besides, this way you can make one army and adapt it for use with different games!

But if you do so, they'll never let you participate in a tournament. Sad, but we can understand the why's…
