I was always told by my football manager to take the opposition seriously, no matter how weeny, weedy and weaky they were. Overconfidence, he would tell us in his thick Perth* accent, was the cause of more defeats than anything else.

Battles have also been lost due to the commander and/or his troops feeling they could not lose.
