1865.

We (being the United States of America) not only won an epic struggle, as most civil wars are, but we learned much from that time, militarily, culturally, and socially. The South would never be the same, nor would it be viewed the same as before. It helped to solidify our standing on the world stage as a "united" nation, as we've never fought against each other again using the tools of war. It greatly progressed our industrial might, paving the way for our preparation as a world leader in the next century. It contributed to the expansion of the Old West through the railroads. Militarily, it opened our awareness to the concepts of trench warfare, commerce raiding, and total war.

It was also the year of what could have been. What would've happened had President Abraham Lincoln served out his second term? How would it have affected Reconstruction, civil rights for blacks, and so on? How much more influence would he have had on our country had he lived his full quota of years?

As someone once succinctly put it, the Civil War was our Iliad.

This year starts the 150th anniversary of the American Civil War. Which year do you think was the most interesting? This may seem like a slam dunk question for some, but give it some thought. The answer, ultimately, may have nothing to do with which year had the biggest/most famous/most battles. Or maybe it does. What influenced your final decision?
