I was laid up in Jr High school after an accident and my dad surprised me with 3 boxes of Airfix Waterloo figures (I had previously not been allowed any toy Soldiers or guns).

After that my best friend got a book "The War Game" by C.S. Grant.

Other than a brief R&R after college I have not looked back from that point.
