What might be interesting is to have a new author "discover" another chest of manuscripts written by someone who knew Flashman. In otherwords, do to Flashman what Frazer did to Tom Brown. What if Esibeth's diary were discovered or the papers of Scud East? It would be interesting to have Flashmen poping in and out of the story, but the reader seeing him through the eyes of others. Most would hold an entirely wrong idea of the "blaggard" thinking him a capital fellow. The fun would be that we would know better. The other advantage would be that the succeeding author would not have to try to emulate Frazer's voice and style. That's where most these continue-series authers fail. As long as the new author is intimately familiar with the Flashmen series, has a symathetic understanding of Frazer's wit, and a flair for writting 19thC. historical fiction the idea might work. It would be even better if the author had access to Fraser's notes such as his daughter. Caro Frazer could write a whole series on the women in Flashman's life. |
