Used to play a lot of ancients when I lived in Omaha, NE. Mostly WRG, some Tactica, even some Newbury "Fast Play" rules. The group made it fun. We didn't hassle, we didn't use motorcycle units whipping around in unrealistic manners, we just played what we considered an ancients style of game. Then DBA, DBM, Picquet and other systems that I consider checkers with miniatures took over. I moved away from my reasonable group, couldn't find another, sold off my armies and haven't played ancients since. So I voted "needs less fun" because IMHO the obsession for speed and simplicity has taken all the flavor out of the gaming. But in the end, I agree with the others that the players make the game, more than the system. |

The designer of a recent Ancients ruleset declared that his game was designed for "maximum fun." Which leads to the conclusion that he must feel that fun is lacking in the hobby. Are you looking for more fun in Ancients gaming? |
