I heard the torpedo story about thirty years ago. The story originated with my current roommate whose father worked with Admiral Rickover in the Navy at the time. When I read Scorpion Down it just reenforced what I had already heard and made a most plausible case for the Soviet torpedo story. The sad "truth" is that we will never know what really happened. It's like the Kennedy Assassination.
