For Quo Vadis, it really depends on the translation. It is the same with Sienkiewicz Fire and Sword trilogy. If you read the earlier translation (which I tried) it is nearly impossible to get past page 30. A newer translation was a joy to read and I read the entire 1200+ page novel in one weekend.

Quo Vadis helped the author win a Nobel prize for literature.
