Frequently, if I'm experimenting with a new technique, or new paints, or unsure of what shades of paint to use for a new type of figure and I want optimum or uniform results.

I also make trial runs of fleshtones for exotic looks, and I often use my Jacobite Highlanders as test subjects for new tartan schemes. (If one doesn't work, it hardly matters in a unit of be-tartaned clansmen, but if it is a pleasing design or could be used for regular military tartans in later periods, I make a note and will reuse that pattern and colors.)
