My ideal rules are those you do not need to read (;-)). Instead you have to know and understand the period. So, if the professionals of their time would do something, deciding on what they have learned and/or experienced, the rules should reward doing that as a gamer. Since however game is game and reality is reality (and never the twain will meet, fortunately) I doubt that I will ever find the ideal set of rules. In the meantime, I watch all those published like a hawk and from time to time strike out to add them to my approximately three or four feet pile….

POLL DESCRIPTION

Terrement Supporting Member of TMP wonders:

It seems like there are at least four types of gamers I've come across:
those firmly wedded to a rule system
These are the folks who are happy with how the games play with this system, and don't want it messed with as the ability to unbalance because of the law of unintended consequences is always present.
those who don't really care what rule system they use, as long as it "works"
These are the folks who have five different Old West or seven different Gladiator rule sets, or whatever, and aren't really thrilled with any of them to the exclusion of the others but happy enough with any of them to get a good game even if it doesn't have "X" feature that is in another of their rule sets.
those who prefer a rule system but tinker with it by adding mods that are copped from other rule systems
These are the folks who are like the guys ordering from the auto customization catalogs to soup up their car. They range from those who can tell if an add-on makes sense and fits well with the general scheme to those who will continually add modifications simply because they are the latest modifications with no concept whatsoever of how it will affect overall game play.
those firmly opposed to particular rule systems
These are the folks who will refuse to play games with IGO-UGO sequences, or games by certain companies, or games with certain types of assumptions.
Which are you (and what group did I forget to mention)?
