While I'm not entirely sure that Barbarossa should count as a "battle", The German decision to invade Russia in 1941 and the failure of the invasion to succeed in many ways determined the rest of the course of the war, both in tieing up German resources in a war in Russia they probably couldn't win after the failure of the initial invasion toknock out the Soviet Union, and additionally in terms of the effect it had on Japanese strategy that by the end of the year lead to the attack on Peal Harbor and the resulting US involvement in the ETO.
