To me, there are two basic kinds of gaming tables, excluding (though not belittling) the cloth on the floor/dining room table...
  1. The grass mat table that's basically a solid green surface with which you can rearrange various terrain pieces... (more versatile)
  2. The contoured foam terrain table, with terrain built/cut right into the playing surface... (better looking IMO, but less versatile)
I play on a grass mat table because it allows us to change the landscape each time. But, given the storage space, I'd love to have multiple, pre-contoured, two-inch-foam table tops.
