McClellan did not win battles that he should have, but he did not lose them either – Hooker, Pope and Burnside all failed in the face of odds and lost their battles. McClellan managed to bleed the ANV white in the Peninsula and Antietam campaigns. I suspect that the relentless ferocity of the attacks as well as his misguided faith in Pinkerton left him more passive than he should have been by rights
