There is a problem with Franks in many rulesets. It is conventional to depict Merovingian Franks as warband and warband are not very good. That's because the evidence for their fighting style is based upon Agathias' description of the battle of Casilinum 554 AD. However, before that there is an action at Rimini in which the Franks form up close to resist cavalry.
Also Frankish armies in Gaul were likely to be more varied than the one that invaded Italy in 552-4 Which was largely composed of Allamannic subjects of the Franks.
Armies in Gaul would have more cavalry and more versatile infantry and thus be rather more effective than the chuck and charge tactics that they are usually with. I also suggest that they would have rather more flible C&C and more skirmishers than the traditional view.
