I thank the two (so far) TMPers for rating Fighting 15s so highly! Games Workshop aside, deciding between the rest of us minnows is tricky. Fighting 15s, for instance, both imports and manufactures under licence (Fighting 15s makes and imports 15mm AB Figures), and has high costs compared with a domestic business that only manufactures. My annual turnover is such that I have had to register for VAT, which as a quick glance at the HMCE site reveals that last year my turnover went over GBP64,000 pa, and this year will no doubt be around or over GBP67,000. Baccus is in the same VAT boat, but stepped aboard several years earlier. You can therefore guess Baccus's minimum turnover – and that from domestic manufacturing of 6mm figures. As Pete also employs Igor, he makes enough to support two people, which Fighting 15s cannot do! I have royalties to pay for a start. Truly Pete Berry has spawned a mighty, tiny empire. Most companies in the poll are not VAT registered (or if they are flout the law by not saying so on their sites). Yet they are probably bigger companies in the wargames world because although they charge less per figure, they make more margin as pure manufacturers. I know discussing with one other 15mm manufacturer that we make about the same per figure with a big disparity in final prices. Our turnovers are also vastly different. Looked at simply financially on business turnover the poll would produce some interesting results, and no doubt completely overturn what is currently just a gut-feeling poll. Ian |
