robert piepenbrink Supporting Member of TMP writes:

Oh, cut the movie-makers some slack! They weren't anthropologists: they were telling adventure stories. Beau Geste would not be improved by a long discussion of the various nomadic peoples in French North Africa, any more than the "Indiana Jones" movies or Casablanca would benefit from a mention of the Versailles Treaty and distinguishing the various volkdeutsch. Now, if your story is about those people--Cheyanne Autumn, The Wind and the Lion or the Kohler and St Cyr mysteries--then you need to get their culture right. But only then.
And ask yourselves how far you want to take the "played by non-Indians" bit. Should Englishmen be allowed to play Scots? Should Jews play Irishmen? The whole point of acting is that you pretend to be something you aren't.
I'm going back to my Yancy Derringer DVDs. Incidentally, Yancy's Pawnee bodyguard was played by a German--X Brands, his real name--who used to get letters from the Pawnee telling him what a great job he was doing.

The rant is ended. Go in peace.

POLL DESCRIPTION

Personal logo ochoin Supporting Member of TMP observes:

Being an astute type of chap, I'm fairly sure no real native Americans ever said, "How!" or "White man speak with forked tongue."

But was the phrase, 'It is a good day to die." in the vocabulary of any native American tribe?

Are there other laughable cliches in this genre you'd like to add?
