As Martin quite rightly points out, are we talking about massed medieval men-at-arms archers or the much lighter armoured bowmen of the ancient period?

Regarding charges it depends on a lot of factors; the ground, the range and the numbers. 10 cataphracts against 500 archers in woodland or with 400 yards between them (sufficient to get off multiple rounds of sharp pointy sticks) are not going to perform particularly well, whereas 10 archers caught by 200 archers in open ground with no stakes and at close range…
