Ney is a heroic figure to me, and I am as glad that his life was spared on the battlefield as I regret his persecution at the hands of his vengeful royalist enemies. I would have preferred he die of old age, peacefully, in bed, after enjoying some normal happiness and deserved honors (like Soult). |

Writing in First Empire magazine, Patrick E. Wilson concludes: It would have been better if Ney had been killed at Quatre Bras or Waterloo and thus spared the indignity of a trial, where the odds of acquital once he got to the Chamber of Peers, given their domination by the Ultra-Royalists and ex-Imperialists anxious to demonstrate their loyalty to the crown, were not that good!
