I was thinking that there are two ways to give a unit that is flanking another unit an advantage.

One is True Flanking. In this case the rules mechanisms are such, for example due to the rules for combat participation or support, that a unit that is attacked in the flank has a distinct disadvantage in the battle, with no need for extra rules. Example IMHO: Saga

The other is to give the flanker or flanked unit specific rules advantages or disadvantages for the situation. Example IMHO: Black Powder

There are systems that mix the two. Example IMHO: Bloody Big Battles

So which is your preference?
