My understanding is that a roster game is one in which you must keep an off-table record of unit losses and current strength, as opposed to, say, removing "dead" castings or placing some sort of strength/status marker(s) with the unit on the table.

I personally dislike the feature. But that's just me. I used to be a Ground Forces All-source Order of Battle Analyst, and I got paid for what the game designer wants me to do for free.
