I want to add a nodd of agreement to Yesthatphil's vote for "history".
I enjoy historical, sci-fi and fantasy miniatures gaming, but historical events from the real world are not only fun to play, they inspire – or even translate directly into – great re-interpretations in fantasy and sci-fi settings.
I played a great re-hash of "Thermopylae" as part of a fantasy campaign pitting my stalwart Feudal Japanese defending against hordes of my buddy's Wood Elves as part of our "casual campaign".
I also recall a really fun sci-fi interpretation of "Operation Mercury" with orbital assault troops, and a "Pearl Harbor" using "Full Thrust" rules.
The combatants and the technology may vary, but tactical and operational problems will remain essentially the same, and history provides us with an effectively endless stream of scenarios to be re-fought with spells or assault rifles, panzers or trolls, dragons or dreadnaughts.
So long as we don't lock ourselves into endless line-of-battle, equal point meeting engagements, then any engagement is possible, and any outcome valid.
