Actually, #5 on this round is looking to be The Mote in God's Eye, for which there is no "moving picture," "talkie" or otherwise. Maybe, just maybe, the people here are actually quite literate and fond of good books, and the fact that someone at some point has made a movie based on the books is actually a reflection of those books' popularity and/or quality, and has no actual causal relationship with either being on this poll or being selected by others. This isn't Discord or Reddit. Heck, TMP is a throwback site largely populated by throwback members— no offense intended. Young net denizens are not here. They're on TikTok, X, Instagram, etc.. People here barely know how to use such things. But we actually do know what "novel" means, and know that films and books are not the same thing, and that a film, however good or popular, is not a stand-in for the book itself. So, yes, I believe that most here are indeed voting for the novels after having read them, probably multiple times. That these choices happen to reflect the broad popularity of the novels chosen is to only be expected. I predict that Dune will be #1, The War of the Worlds #2, 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea #3, The Time Machine #4, and Starship Troopers #5, because I'm pretty darn certain that these books have been the most broadly read and appreciated of those listed. |
