D&D is the first RPG, and began as a wargame, a way of adding fantasy elements to Chainmail, Gygax's medieval wargame system. It introduced the very concepts of a roleplaying game essentially as a new realm of wargaming. That it was a distinct form of gaming in its own right was recognized very quickly, but yes, it was conceived as a wargame first, and certainly changed the industry!
