I played Warrior Kings, THW's ancient rules. I liked the way troops have a tendency to do their own thing once in contact with the enemy, taking control away from the players. It puts a premium on keeping a reserve. The second or third game we played saw one Gallic cavalry squadron run down the whole Roman line in one turn, routing most of the army. Both the Roman player (me) and the Gallic player didn't like that and we stopped playing. I discovered afterwards that I'd missed the rule about pursuit – that Gallic cavalry would have lit out after the first or second cohort it routed. So some day we need to dust it off and try it again. I've heard that Warrior Heroes (the fantasy version) is a cleaned version of Warrior Kings, just ignore the fantasy if you're an old stick-in-the-mud like me. |
