I have a table in my game room for a playing surface. Upon that table, I put one of several dyed canvas cloths. Not painted. Dyed.

Cloths are just the easiest for me.

I also have a beautiful set of boards that were given (!) to me by Cacique Caribe a year or so back. I have used them on a couple of occassions, and store them against the wall of the gameroom the rest of the time. Not the easiest things in the world to store (which is why he gave them up – space issues), and not super-portable, but very nice.

Ideally (your preference here), how portable should a wargame playing surface be?
immobile

Once established, there is no need to move it and one would never want to move it. This is my baby and it ain't goin' anywhere! It's OK to build the playing surface into the room so that it could never be removed absent some serious demolition.

semi-permanent

The playing surface needs to be sturdy and substantial. Significant time and more than one person needed to disassemble and move the playing surface.

imposing but mobile

The playing surface can be moved, but requires more than one person to do so, and perhaps an hour or so to partially disassemble the playing surface.

large and portable

Playing surface can be broken down and moved in a matter of minutes, but is large enough that it would probably take a couple of people to move it around.

manageable but portable

Playing surface can be broken down in a matter of minutes, and can be moved by a single person.

manageable, portable, storable

Playing surface can be broken down in a matter of minutes, can be moved by a single person, and folds up to allow it to be stored away in a relatively small area.
