I think your "Math" has to be done before a game - in those systems where you are allowed to construct your army prior to play. I took "Doing the Math" to mean giving yourself the greatest possible chance to win. For an example, in Warhammer (boo hiss I know) my core units would be constructed to a level of combat result pluses before a single dice is thrown. During play you just have to know the rules well enough to know if a move would have any chance of success or at least what the effects of a failing move were. And, I would suggest doing your thinking while the other guy is taking his turn - makes you smarter and more confident when you already know what you will do once the other player is done. However, as I always say in Strat-o-matic Baseball: taking risks wins championships! Now that's a game for the Mathematically inclined. |

A recent article for Miniature Wargames magazine provided a mathematical analysis for different types of combat for a popular ruleset. Have you ever used math to determine probabilities in the rules you play? |
