Using BooneC's definitions, I would fall into the plain school. I think, though, that the "what I want to do versus what I'm willing to do" conundrum sums up the problem perfectly. I don't like the mini diorama bases, because I don't like the look of dragging foliage around a city street. So, I use Litko bases painted to match my ground cloth. It is, to my mind, a little better than dragging brush around a city street and I can write organization info on the bases. Of course, you can still argue that they are dragging green carpet around a city street but hey, . My 1/1200 scale ships have textured bases, but the ground cloth there can be a little more bland than land warfare with varied terrains. I saw someone who bases their ships on clear perspex/plexiglass, and that way the ground cloth shows through. I like it, but I have too many ships to rebase them all now. I thought about it for my WWII infantry, but the too many figures problem rears its head again. Also, even on a clear base the moulded-on bases that each figure stands on would still be noticeable. For land warfare figures, I don't know that there is a 'good' answer. |
