I usually try to unify a faction with a given pallette,
thus (IMO) creating a unique iconographic "feel".

It depends on how 'hard' the SF is though:
more archetypical Science-Fantasy tends to geta more 'cartooney' treatment
(eg Star Wars: 'Bad Guys' are Black & White, 'Good Guys' are Earth Tones & Pastelles. John Carter Warlord of Mars is mostly Pastelle shades of Primary or Secondary colors, 40K all use a "comic-strip" pallette of 3-4 colors)

OTH, my "Hard" SF (My OGRE, Full Thrust, and Dirtside stuff) tend to get a more 'realistic' pallette of colors.

Vallejo "Gamescape" vs "Model Militairy" colors, now that I think about it.

As I repaint them, I have gone with a more generic palette so that I can treat them all as "Mercs" and be able to mix them.

Do you prefer to use a unique color to mark each force, unit, or squad?
