First Empire magazine issue 79 has an article on "the last Neapolitan battle" - the Siege of Gaeta in 1815. In a nutshell, the situation is that General Begani has been ordered by King Murat of Naples to take command of the fortifications on a small peninsula of Italy's west coast (near the port town of Gaeta). Murat's army is then defeated (and surrenders), and Murat flees to France. Naval forces blockade Gaeta, and land forces draw near. Called to surrender, General Begani refused to do so without a formal order from his king. If you had been in Begani's place, would you have surrendered? |
