I stopped reading the books when Martin was just repeating what had already happened, just from a different characters perspective. The HBO show is one of the few times when the show is better than the book.

I enjoyed the first two books, but then the plots wandered, too many characters killed off, the last few books seemed to repeat what had happened before, etc. Haven't watched the last 3 years, but I enjoyed the HBO series when I was watching it and will eventually get around to viewing it all.

GRRM originally planned on GoT (ASOIAF, some folks get really angry if you call the books GoT instead of "A Saga of Ice and Fire, not me mind you but some folks) to be a three book series. When the books took off his publisher talked him into expanding them to first five and now of course seven books. I think that it shows, IMHO books four and five were just time wasters, you had characters like Quentyn who were introduced, did their stuff and died without really moving the plot along. I'll bet the books would be better if there had only been three or maybe four at the most. Of course as recently as last year you had folks trying to talk GRRM into an eighth book.
