One of my gaming buddies and I played a WAB Roman Civil War campaing once set in the late Republic era. It was a blast. You not only have the legions but all the various allied/mercenary units to draw upon which makes for some interesting battles. Plus with Roman v. Roman it comes down to who has the better battle plan and deployment because you both have dependable forces. Even then things happen and suddenly that veteran unit is running away leaving a huge gap in your lines.

POLL DESCRIPTION

Back in Slingshot 247, Ilkka Syvanne's article on Constantine's "art of war" described a number of interesting Roman vs Roman campaigns:

...The remnants of these cavalry fled back to Verona, which was defended by the able Ruricius Pompeianus, Maxentius' praetorian prefect. He knew that his forces suffered from poor morale and therefore decided to hold the river line. Constantine answered by using the classic strategy. He simply sent part of his army across at a point further away that was not guarded by the enemy. So he surrounded the city from two sides. Pompeianus sallied out in an effort to prevent this from happening, but failed miserably. While the fighting was still going on, Pompeianus slipped away past the approaching forces. When the eventual relief army under Pompeianus came, Constantine left part of his forces to continue the siege while he himself advanced against the approaching enemy....
