Right now "using tablets to assist wargaming" is number one and printing 3D terrain at home is number two. I will ignore the latter though I think it would be awesome to have the equipment (and the $$$) to be able to do that.

Though I do think tablets are going to be a "hot trend" I don't think the majority of the older players will be using them very much after a few experiences with them. Except for the GM I think currently they detract from the game experience and they will relegated to what their main intended function is. When safe, affordable, fast linkage exists for multiple players than maybe they will "add value" to the game experience.

What's in the "early adopters" stage of the bell curve?

Alright, so obviously this is a subject that calls for a lot of guesswork and this thread (if it takes off) may appear comically off-target in retrospect, but as long as we're just doing it for good cheer, let's.

If we take "What's hot?" to be about what's at/near the peak of the bell curve, and "What's not hot?" to be about what's at/past the end of it, that leaves the question of what's at the beginning of the bell curve the "early adopters" stage, if you will.

So, what looks poised to become a future trend, major phenomenon or "old familiar" in miniature wargaming? Scales, genres/periods/settings, rules design concepts, technologies, community practices, specific products or companies, anything.

I nominate:

  • 3mm (1:600) as a land wargaming scale (as beginning to be asserted by Oddzial Osmy and Magister Militum)
  • 3d-printing terrain at home with low-end 3d printers (not so much figures and vehicles yet, just terrain)
